instead of的用法

instead是一个英语单词，副词，作副词时意为“代替；反而；相反”。作为短语介词，instead of 后面常跟名词、代词和动名词，偶尔也跟复合结构。

1、作为短语介词，instead of 后面常跟名词、代词和动名词，偶尔也跟复合结构。例如：

I have come instead of my brother. He is ill.

2、Instead of 后面还可跟形容词、副词、动词、不定式、介词短语和从句，这时他相当于连词，但也有不少人认为他们是介词。但是，对中学生来说，重要的不是他的词性，而是他的用法。请看下面的例句：

Taking exercise every day makes him look younger instead of older. 每天锻炼身体使他显得更年轻而不是苍老。（连接形容词）

3、Instead 单独使用的时候式副词，常用于句末。例如：

We’ve no coffee. Would you like tea instead.

我没有咖啡了，喝茶行吗？

instead和instead of的用法与区别

1、两者的共同意思是“代替”，含有“用前者而不用后者”的意味。仅在于instead是副词， instead of是复合介词。

2、instead常位于句尾或句首（在句首时常用逗号和句子隔开），表示“代替”、“反而、却”的意思。

They didn’t meet her, they met her cousin instead.

他们没有遇到她，而是遇到了她的表姐。

3、instead of后面常跟名词或动名词，表示“替代……”、“不是……而是……”

He drank some juice instead of beer.

他没有喝啤酒，而是喝了一些果汁。

4、instead of后面还可跟形容词、副词、动词、不定式、介词短语和从句，这时它相当于连词。

But the businessman grew worse instead of better.

但这位商人的情况没有好转，反而进一步恶化了。

I go to bed late instead of early.我总是很晚才睡。

instead of和rather than的区别

rather than和 instead of是同义词，但前者更管用。因为rather than是连词，只要左右两边的词性对等就好；而instead of 是介词词组，后面只能接名词或动名词。我们重点来看看rather than 左右两边都可接什么词：

1、左边为名词，右边为名词或动名词，如：

What really matters in life is our personality rather than our outward appearance.

我们生命中真正重要的是内在性格，而非外在形象。

Right now there is a lot of focus on shiny objects, rather than solving problems.

目前许多关注点都放在那些酷炫的事物上，而非真正地在解决问题。

2、左右两边为形容词，如：

Coco tends to be optimistic rather than pessimistic.

Coco往往会表现出更乐观而非悲观。

3、左边为动词不定式时，右边的动词不定式的to往往省略，如：

Peter opted to study in his hometown rather than go abroad.

Peter选择留在家乡学习而非出国（深造）。

Coco prefers to hike rather than ski.

Coco比起滑雪来更愿意去徒步。

注意：在would rather A than B 中，A和B都要求是动词原形，如：

The captives would rather die than live in disgrace（不优雅）。

这些俘虏宁愿牺牲也不苟活着。
